Can’t Be Tamed: Winter Boots That Let You Run Wild

When the temperature drops to cruel depths, too many people give up, resigned to staying indoors through the whole winter. But you’re not content with staying in bed and watching reruns with a cup of hot cocoa—no, you live for the thrill of adventure, and winter’s not going to stop you.

When you’re an all-weather adventurer, boots that can handle the tundra are more than a desire—they’re a necessity. Invest in a pair of outdoor-worthy winter boots that set you free even in the snow.

High Shaft

One of the most important design features of a good winter boot is also one of the simplest—to protect the ankles and feet from snow getting in. It’s essential that the shaft of the boot stretches onto the calf. Low-cut shoes just won’t do in anything more than a dusting, and with a calf height boot or higher, you can tuck in your pants to make doubly sure that your feet don’t get wet.

Waterproof Outer

Getting your feet wet in cold weather is a serious problem that can lead to blistering, discomfort and even frostbite in extreme circumstances. In order to prevent that, your boots need to be fully waterproof. A non-porous exterior might not be as breathable as your canvas sneakers, but it’ll keep you dry and seal in warmth as you trek through the snow.

Fuzzy Lining

The key to warmth is a base layer of insulation (provided by a wool sock), a fuzzy insulating layer and a final waterproofing outer layer. Whether it’s shearling, fur or a well-made synthetic, a fuzzy lining is what makes the difference between dry and cold feet and dry and warm feet. The texture of this soft liner also makes for a cute visual element—tuck your thermal leggings in to show off the fur for a luxe look.

Thick Sole

You’d be surprised how much heat we lose through our feet. In the winter the ground is frozen, so it radiates cold into the soles of your feet right through your shoes. A thick rubber sole not only provides an insulating barrier against that chill, but also protects you from potentially harmful slips and falls on slick, icy surfaces.

The cold weather needn’t restrict you to your living room couch. Just bundle up and throw on a pair of good winter boots and enjoy the bracing day.

These winter boots make sure you have no excuse to stay inside.
