Watch Etiquette 101: Guidelines on Which Watch to Wear Where

Take a step back and review your entire wardrobe, accessories and all. You definitely have your clothing and shoes categorized by occasion, but what about your watch? Just like you wouldn’t wear jeans to a wedding, not every watch is suitable for every situation.

You’re right on time for Stylight’s watch etiquette 101. We won’t call these rules—those were made to be broken—but guidelines to making sure you show up where you need to be in the right timepiece.

For Work

This is the watch you’ll wear and rely on the most, so you want to make sure it’s practical in appearance with straps suitable for everyday wear. For both men and women, a sleek chronograph watch with stainless steel or leather straps will due.

Men: Classy is the man who chooses a watch with brown straps and a golden face—extra points if your watch matches your cufflinks.

Women: For maximum elegance in the workplace, opt for a white leather-strap watch with a golden face, too.

For Play

When it’s time to let loose and blow off some steam, there’s no reason for you to hold back with your timepiece. Choose a watch with a bold face to stand out against your laid-back look.

Men: Take a cue from the sleek and sexy style of pilots with an aviator watch. Pair it with a crisp, white polo, chino shorts and boat shoes.

Women: All the chicness you need lies in a rose-gold link watch, navy sheath and candy-colored loafers.

For Black Tie Events

Black tie events like weddings are no place for a chunky watch with leather straps. When choosing a watch for such an event think, “the thinner the better.” Ditch your everyday wristwatch and stick to one with a thin face and straps.

Men: A sleek, silver watch that won’t stand out against your suit.

Women: Bracelet watch with crystal accents to match any dress or gown.

Keep these guidelines in mind for your next fancy occasion. And whatever you do, never ever wear a digital watch.

Strap on nothing but elegance with these watches.
