Wearing White Underwear the Right Way

While white may seem like the ultimate basic color, wearing the pale shade can be surprisingly difficult to pull off when it comes to undergarments. From sports bras to socks, there’s a better way to do white underneath it all.

Your tighty whiteys and tube socks can be a real challenge. Learn how to master white foundation garments once and for all.

Lingerie

When slipping into ivory unmentionables, it’s easy for the look to verge quickly into bridal—or worse, baby-like. Avoid the infantilizing, virginal look of white lingerie by going for pieces that introduce subtle elements of color. A touch of pink, nude or grey calms the brightness of the white and keeps things looking grown up. Most importantly, avoid wearing these skivvies when wearing anything remotely sheer—for those looks, stick to a nude bra or a black one that’s meant to be seen.

Athletic

White is a quintessential color for athletic wear, appearing historically on everything from sneakers to sports bras. But in your high-energy activity, it’s easy for your white athletic gear to get soiled with dirt and sweat. Prevent staining and overheating by going for light, breathable fabrics like cotton and sweat-absorbing polyester, and throw them in the wash with an oxidizing cleaner to rid them of dinge. When you keep your gym clothes this fresh, you’ll want to wear them on the street, too—try a cool-kid athleisure look by pairing a white sports bra with tapered sweatpants and round sunglasses.

Socks

White socks have an unfortunate tendency toward nerdy, but this isn’t always the case. When they’re peeking out from white high-tops, they visually continue the line of the shoe, creating a striking base for any look. You can also run with the nerdy feel, introducing a little sex appeal by pairing white striped tube socks with hot pants and a halter top for a 70s-inspired ensemble.

Undershirts

Wearing an absorbent undershirt beneath your button-down is a great way to reduce sweat stains and prevent see-through situations, but letting the lines of your undershirt show through defeats the garment’s whole purpose. Make sure you keep your undershirt discreet by choosing a sleeveless one when the shirt is sheer.
