Play Around with Plaid Pants

There may not be many patterns with a history so revolutionary that they’ve been banned by a nation’s government, but that’s what happened with plaid (or tartan, as it’s otherwise called) in 18th-century Scotland.

While plaid was then seen as a divisive force for its role in symbolizing clan warrior identity, we think it can actually unify diverse groups of people. After all, what do a CEO, couch-potato and punk-rock drummer all have in common? Plaid pants. Here’s how to wear these checkered bottoms like each of those very different characters.

The Corporate Ladder-Scaler

We can’t help you break through the glass ceiling, but we can help you get past some of your wardrobe limitations. Make plaid pants the star of your office look by pairing them with close-toed high heels and a sharply-tailored blazer. You’ll subtly be letting your workforce competition know that you mean business.

The Homebody

You know him—that guy you can never get to hang out on the weekends, but only because he’d rather stay home and chill out. You might give him grief, but you’ve got to admit that he’s one of the most relaxed people you’ve met. Channel his nonplussed vibe by donning plaid pajama pants with a big comfy t-shirt and cozy slipper socks.

The Rocker

Whether associated with punk-rock or 90s grunge, plaid can also have an undeniably alternative undertone to it. Channel your inner rebel by topping off your tartan pants with a black leather jacket and studded biker boots. Put a snarl on your face and you’re ready for the concert.

No matter which way you roll, there’s certain to be a form of the plaid pant that’s right for you. And if one doesn’t exist yet, go ahead and experiment—you might just spawn the next subculture that others will look to for inspiration.

Plaid pants can fit into a variety of wardrobes.
