4 Steps to the Right Trashcan

Germans recycle. This is evident in the selection of trashcan models available. Whether it is a diaper pail which packs used diapers away airtight, a waste paper basket under a desk, or cosmetics trashcans and table trashcans which can be used in the bathroom or on the breakfast table. Trashcans which combine several recycling containers under one lid are also practical and are often found under the kitchen sink.

1. The right size

The first matter to consider before purchasing is: How big does the trashcan need to be? A trashcan which is too small will have to be constantly emptied, whereas one which is too large seldom needs emptying. This results in unpleasant odors and germs. The capacity of a trashcan is measured in gallons – this number is also helpful when it comes to purchasing the right garbage bags.

  • Table trashcans: around a quarter to half a gallon
Budget: from $10, Bestsellers: Brema, Blomus
  • Bathroom trashcans: 1.3 to 1.8 gallons
Budget: from $20, Bestsellers: Authentics, Batex
  • Paper trashcan: around 5 gallons
Budget: from $16, Bestsellers: Umbra, Klein & More
  • Kitchen trashcans: from 8 gallons for small households, up to 18 gallons for very large households
Budget: from $20 for small models, Bestsellers: Hailo, Zone Denmark

2. The right opening

So it doesn’t smell, a kitchen trashcan should have a lid.

  • The pedal trashcan is the most popular model, since it can be opened hygienically – without using your hands.
  • A trashcan with a swing lid also keeps the trash under wraps. However, a swing lid has to be manually opened.
  • The removable lid, which can still be fastened down using clips, also requires manual operation.
  • An open-top trashcan is particularly suitable for paper.

3. The right material

For household trash it has to be a water-resistant model which will not rust. Stainless steel and sturdy plastic should be your first choice.

Hint: Trashcans should be cleaned at regular intervals to prevent odors. Wipe the trashcan with hot water first of all and then clean with detergent and a sponge. Dispose of the sponge afterwards.

Anyone looking for a trashcan for their kitchen might invest in a pedal model made from stainless steel or plastic. Small households could manage with an 8 gallon trashcan, while larger ones might need up to 18 gallons.
