Nothing is more effective than light for transforming the appearance of a room. Our tip: Instead of opting for one large ceiling light, why not create some fascinating effects with several small lamps? Here’s a rundown on the right type of mini lamp for each area of the home and the best light bulbs to go for.
Three easy steps to a perfectly illuminated room
- General lighting in the form of wall and ceiling lights or downlights, provides basic illumination and visual orientation.
- Accent lighting focuses light on places where it is needed for specific activities, such as reading and cooking or at a desk, thereby creating decorative light accents.
- Ambient lighting is produced by unusual lamps which accentuate special room features, drawing attention to them and creating atmosphere.
The right mini lamp for every room
Small lamps can be used in addition to basic lighting to create a few extra highlights.
- Living room: For a quiet read on the sofa, you need bright light from a lamp with a rotating or swing arm. Table lamps on window sills or sideboards are good for creating atmosphere, while floor lights produce decorative spots of light in dark corners. Clamp spotlights are suitable for highlighting bookcases or pictures.
- Bedroom: Slim reading lamps or wall spotlights can be used for nightstands. In wardrobes, light cubes attached to shelves provide extra illumination.
- Kitchen: The illumination of countertops can be optimised with the help of clamp lights, plug lamps, or under-cabinet halogen lamps.
- Study: adjustable desk lamps for the work surface. Pictures, wall surfaces and shelves are best illuminated with little spotlights.
Overview of light bulbs
- LED bulbs: emit warm light and achieve maximum luminosity straightaway. They are considered the latest thing in lighting technology, as they don’t contain any harmful substances, use up to 90 percent less energy than conventional light bulbs and have a long life.
- Energy-saving bulbs: can distort colors and usually only come on after a delay. They use 80 percent less electricity than conventional light bulbs. Owing to their mercury content, they can only be disposed of at special facilities for hazardous waste.
- Halogen lamps: emit warm light, similar to a conventional light bulb. They provide excellent color rendition and achieve maximum luminosity straightaway. However, they only use around 20 to 30 percentless electricity than conventional light bulbs.
- Special tip: The lower the Kelvin value (K), the warmer the color of the light. Warm light is emitted by bulbs with a Kelvin value of between 2,700 and 3,300.
You can never have enough small lamps –whether you want to make a style statement, add a bit of decoration or create a special atmosphere, cleverly positioned mini lamps make even the plainest of rooms come alight.
Whether in the form of a ceiling spotlight, bedside lamp or desk lamp, small lamps offer you extra flexibility.
