Photos, paintings, prints: Embellish your walls with pictures

Decorative pictures generate a good atmosphere. They can additionally reduce the echo in a room. The following four tips will reveal the secrets to giving your walls pride of place:

1. Canvases, Photographs and Picture Frames

  • Forms: Pictures are available on canvas, as photographs, paintings or artistic prints. Canvases provide more clarity in a room. Canvases without frames are most decorative in small to medium styles or in XL sizes.
  • Picture frames: Pictures and photographs should appear in frames on the wall – they look particularly elegant as a mount. Embellished or extra wide frames give a dynamic visual effect. Make sure that edges and mounts have a clean finish.

2. Themes

  • Faces: Watch out for the Mona-Lisa-effect: Only hang portraits where you won’t feel you’re being watched. Good for the sitting room, not in the restroom!
  • Natural themes: Landscapes, animals and flowers are pretty in sequence and suit the medium-sized walls of corridors, kitchens or guest toilets. They create optical space in these locations. You can mix the style of paintings, however aim for harmonious colors and themes as well as similar picture sizes.
  • Abstract art: It’s sometimes not possible at first glance, to make out what the picture represents. Such artwork looks best as an individual piece on blank walls, but it can also be accompanied by a sideboard.

3. Mountings

  • Wall properties: A nail is sufficient for small pictures. A drill is required in new buildings and for large pictures. Watch out for old construction walls: They can quickly crumble in your direction.
  • Mount rails: Suited for lot of pictures in one area (gallery-effect!). Attaching rails in the ceiling. Advantage: You can quickly swap, add or rearrange your pictures.

4. Lighting

Special lights are fixed above the picture, bringing them into the limelight. Standing lamps and spotlights are also suitable. Light sensitive pictures should be placed behind protective glass and should only be illuminated by indirect light. You must also watch out for the sun!

Pictures are a must for any home that wants to avoid a cold atmosphere. Whether holiday memories on canvas, family photos in frames or an artistic print behind glass: For every type of picture there is the correct mounting and lighting.
