Pendant Lights: Classic, Contemporary and Extravagant

Pendant lights hang down on a long cable from the ceiling and provide a low-hanging light for a dining table or a direct light for a sideboard. Thanks to this special way they are hung, they immediately catch the eye when you walk into a room. Stylight advises how to select the right model.

The avant-garde light

This unusual type of lamp not only provides the right light for a room, it is a work of art in itself. Those who own these lamps are not afraid of unusual shapes, colors or materials. How about a knot-effect pendant light, with a foldable shade or decorative feathers? This means that the whole apartment doesn’t need to be extravagantly furnished. Rather, it is the lamp which attracts attention in what are otherwise simple surroundings.

  • Budget: simple models from around $50
  • Favorite brands: Loistaa, Lampadina
  • Hint: Those who find these lights too flashy could take a colorful textile cable and combine it with a somewhat discreet lamp.

The chandelier

The chandelier is probably the most elaborate sort of pendant light. However this lamp doesn’t need to be old-fashioned or kitsch. In addition to Baroque models there are also various contemporary chandeliers – in flashy colors and unusual materials.

  • Small budget: there are plastic models available from $30. Favorite brands: Näve, Mendler.
  • Average budget: models made from metal and glass start at around $300. Favorite brands: Kare Design, Lux.
  • Big budget: Good quality, detailed, large models start at $600. Favorite brands: Hans Kögl, Paul Neuhaus.

The classic pendant light

Pendant lights allow you to have discreet light in rooms. There is an abundance of choice, from single to multiple-flame models. Longer lamps which have several bulbs are particularly good across long dining tables. Anyone who only wants to light up a specific area, for instance a coffee table, should opt for a model which has a light bulb. Spherical white classic bulbs are discreet. Industrial-style models are becoming ever more popular, with lampshades made from metal and visible bulbs. Lamps made from rice paper are particularly good for those on a budget and are great for combining with other objects.

  • Favorite brands: Lampadina, Nino Leuchten
  • Hint: The height of some pendant lights can be adjusted. Practical above tables where more, or less, light is required.

Multiple flame pendant lights are perfectly suited to above the dining table, in particular when the height needs to be adjustable. Avant-garde lamps, much like chandeliers, need space for their full effect to be revealed and are best positioned in a large hall, lounge or bedroom.
