Here’s what to wear on your European summer vacation

Maybe you’re going to Italy this summer, or island hopping in Greece, or perhaps you just simply want to incorporate that effortless European style into your wardrobe. Take it from style influencers like Matilda Djerf, Pernille Teisbæk,  or Emili Sindlev, there’s just something about European fashion—chic, sexy, and still practical. Now only one question remains: what to wear on your European summer vacation? As your friendly neighbourhood European, I’m here to tell you.

Europe is an extremely diverse continent, where neighbouring countries, and even countries that share the same language, have vastly different cultures and ways of life. That’s why paying attention to the specific locations you’ll be hitting up during Euro summer is as important as ensuring that your wardrobe matches each country’s specific vibe. Most of Europe still shares some common traits when it comes to style: sustainability, blending tradition and modernity, mixing high and low elements, and a focus on artisanal production. Generally speaking, Europeans are slightly more formal in their way of dressing: for example, you’ll rarely see a European person wearing sportswear or athleisure, unless they’re on their way to the gym or fifteen years old.

Packing is the first, massive hurdle to overcome, but we’ve got some tips and tricks to make it easy peasy. When packing, firstly keep in mind the climate of the country you’re visiting—and don’t assume, actually check! Secondly, remember to consider what activities you have planned: are you touring Italian landmarks? Island hopping in Greece? Enjoying the French countryside? And when the daily activities are over, are you planning to experience the local nightlife too? These are all considerations to make while packing your suitcase.

To avoid overpacking, try the viral TikTok 333 method: three tops, three bottoms, and three pairs of shoes. If you pick items that are neutral, versatile, and cohesive, you’ll be able to mix and match your nine pieces in almost endless combinations—maybe not endless… but you get the gist. This tried and true method is a surefire way to make all your packing fit in a carry-on suitcase.

We’ve talked about Europe in general and we’ve discussed efficient packing. Now is the time to get into the real fun stuff: outfit ideas! Here are my European-approved looks for different areas of the continent.

Western European fashion is rich in cultural references, but also has some common traits that can be found everywhere in the region, from London to Berlin: attention to craft and detail, mixing high and low elements, and individuality.

Germans and French people are drawn to timeless and modern styles, high-quality materials, effortlessness, and a practical flair.

The UK, on the other hand, is known for its edgy and alternative subcultures, its traditional fabrics—like tweed, tartan, and wool—and the high-street fashion scene.

In short, if you stick to minimal, clean silhouettes and neutral tones, you’ll blend right in anywhere in Western Europe: think a pair of well-fitted, straight-leg pants, a boxy sleeveless top, and some understated but practical sneakers.

Italian style is all about elegance and craftsmanship, as well as mixing traditional and modern elements for a timeless and recognisable look.

Fashion in Greece, on the other hand, is bohemian and chic, drawing from the country’s ancient history with draped silhouettes and earthy tones.

Lastly, Spanish style is heavily inspired by flamenco and traditional garments which embody art and creativity, as well as a modern and avant-garde approach.

When visiting Southern Europe, remember to keep your outfits on the conservative side: many religious and governmental buildings require to cover shoulders and legs to access. A full linen ensemble consisting of a short-sleeved shirt and wide-leg pants is perfect to keep it both modest and cool.

Scandinavian fashion is all about creating the perfect balance between minimalism and personality while embodying practicality and sustainability.

Scandinavians want pieces that work for everything from the office to the weekend, and many Scandi brands focus on ethical production practices and sustainable materials.

Layering is also fundamental for Scandi fashion, as the weather can get quite cold and unpredictable.

While being quite minimalistic in silhouette, Scandinavian style is also known for its love for subtle details, interesting textures, and practical features. The perfect Scandi travel outfit? A voluminous midi dress à la Ganni styled with dad sneakers—New Balance is a favourite—and a utilitarian sling bag.

Eastern European fashion, from Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, is all about mixing tradition and modernity.

Polish fashion combines elegance and practicality with folk-inspired designs, neutral colours, and contemporary silhouettes; Czech fashion, much like Greece’s bohemian vibe, emphasises artistic expression and functionality; lastly, Hungarian fashion mixes old-world charm with modern and cutting-edge designs.

Each country’s fashion scene is characterised by a commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovative design. Versatile outerwear is key all over Eastern Europe, especially during transitional seasons.

For your Easter European trip go for an oversized button-down shirt, tailored shorts with a matching blazer if it’s cold, and elevated accessories.

Now that you’re an expert on European fashion, it’s time to come up with your packing list for Europe. Ready to take notes?

• Neutral tops: Pick tops that are breathable and easy to style, and consider sticking to neutral colours—100% cotton and linen are your best friends. Make sure to pack different sleeve lengths too depending on occasion.
• Comfortable pants: Go for breezy, wide-leg options, and stay away from leggings and athleisure. If you can’t give up shorts, go for refined, tailored cuts.
• Versatile dresses: One-and-done dresses are perfect day-to-night options. Midi and maxi lengths are preferable, and details like pockets are the cherry on top.

• Light, waterproof jacket: You never know what the weather has in store, so make sure to pack at least one lightweight, possibly water-resistant jacket.
• Lightweight jumpers and cardigans: Don’t forget to pack some thin cashmere or cotton to keep you warm if it gets chilly or to cover your shoulders when entering religious buildings.
• Scarves and pashminas: If it’s too hot for a jumper but you still need to cover up, wrapping a printed pashmina around your shoulders is a very stylish and European way to do so.

• Costume jewellery: This goes without saying, but only bring jewellery you’re okay with possibly losing. Unfortunately, Grandma’s gold ring will have to sit this one out.
• A practical sling or bum bag: Even though pickpocketing is not as common as it may seem on social media, it’s better to keep your belongings close. A sling bag or a bum bag is perfect for this, and there are some super stylish options out there. Don’t fall for the fear-mongering, use your street smarts!
• A nighttime bag: If your European itinerary includes exploring the nightlife, you can also carry a smaller shoulder bag for the evening. As always, don’t panic and stay aware of your surroundings.

• Stylish sneakers: Contrary to popular belief, Europeans do wear sneakers! Even super sporty brands like Hoka are having somewhat of a moment, so your bright pink Bondis likely won’t look out of place. New Balance is another great brand for comfortable yet stylish sneakers.
• Evening options: Ballet flats, Mary Janes, and walkable kitten heels are all great choices for evening shoes—just be wary of the cobblestone if you go for heels. European women love “friulane”, velvet Mary Janes typical of the Northeast of Italy.
