Moon milk is an Ayuverdic-inspired hot beverage that can be used as an antidote to stress, insomnia, and general life jitters.

The drink typically consists of warm cow’s milk, honey, and cinnamon and has been used as a holistic remedy for sleep deprivation for generations.

Today’s Instagram-upgraded Moon Milk is a vegan twist on the cow milk classic. Many recipes found online call for the addition of adaptogens (plant-based, nutrient-dense supplements), turmeric, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, coconut oil, and plant-based milk.

Adaptogens have been shown to boost your body’s immune system, lower blood sugar, help destress, and lull you into a deep sleep at the end of a long day.

To make your own moon milk, there are several recipes you can follow. Bon Appétit‘s moon milk recipe follows a traditional Ayuverdic route or you can get creative with your nighttime beverage and make a cherry lavender version or go for a peppermint twist.

However you take your moon milk, combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium-low heat and whisk vigorously to avoid any unappetizing clumps. Let the mixture cool slightly and stir in your honey.
