Why You Have To Attend The Women’s March Tomorrow
‘Feminist’ has become a bit of a buzzword in recent years, and not always in a good way. It’s been cheapened by being slapped onto campaigns as an easy marketing tool, trivialised with every placard-toting celebrity on social media. With each mention it seems ‘feminist’ has lost its gravitas. But lately, the election of Donald Trump as 45th President of the United States has given ‘feminist’ renewed vigour.
Why? Because if Trump’s policies are made official bills, the results could be catastrophic for millions of people and women especially. Without going into too much detail (though NARAL Pro-Choice America neatly sums them up), Trump’s controversial stance on women’s reproductive rights includes his plan to:
– Ban abortion (except in the case of rape, incest, and when the woman’s life is in danger)
– Defund Planned Parenthood, the non-profit organisation offering free sexual health care and advice
– Repeal the Affordable Care Act, which makes health insurance accessible to low income earners
Not ideal for the world’s largest marginalised groups, AKA women and low income earners. So this is where you come in. By walking in the Women’s March you actively support women’s rights not just in America but the world over. By walking you show what it really means to be a feminist.
The Women’s March, regardless of city, is a grassroots effort to speak up for the rights of all women. It’s an event to invoke consciousness into society and define human rights in the future. This piece poignantly penned by Alex Morris for Rolling Stone brilliantly raises several problems with Trump’s policies and makes a damn strong case for why you should go to the Women’s March in your city.
Still not convinced? Well, if not for the future daughters you may have and the daughters of others, perhaps you’ll be moved to march by looking at it this way: Because it’s the right thing to do.
Walk because it’s your right as much as anyone else’s to have access to basic health care. Walk because it’s your right to voice your opinion. Walk because to be a woman is to be human. And to be human is to be equal.
