Well, have no fear, we’re here to help and give you some examples of what you should and should not wear.

Cocktail is less elaborate than an evening dress or black tie, but still more festive than daywear.  The term “cocktail dress” owes its name to Christian Dior, who came up with the idea of an elegant dress that can be worn in the early evening and is suitable for a going out for a cocktail or an apéritif.

If you’re not sure what to wear, here are the do’s and dont’s for cocktail attire for women and men.

Cocktail attire for women is pretty straightforward, and there are plenty of options for every kind of personal style. But if you’re looking to make a statement, here on some ideas for an on-trend  outfit.

Oufit ideas for cocktail attire

If it’s a summer party, opt for a colorful dress with bold colors or print. Dresses with puffy sleeves or ruffles are super on trend right now and will add a little extra drama to your outfit. Halter, short sleeves, long sleeves, or even spaghetti straps – sleeve length is up to you! Just wear what feels most comfortable. If you don’t want to wear a dress, you can also wear a chic pant suit (Our tip? A monochrome look in pink or orange) or even flowy wide-leg pants  with an elegant, silk top. You can also never go wrong with a jumpsuit.

For shoes, we suggest slingback pumps or some strappy heels. If you’re feeling brave, try out a pair of chunky, plateau sandals! But keep in mind that if you’re going to be doing a lot of dancing, you might want something a bit more comfortable. If you want to go without a heel, than opt for a pair of cute mules, sandals, or  ballerinas.

• No denim fabric, that means no jeans or denim skirts, but denim jackets are okay in case it gets a little cold later in the evening.
• Long ball gowns – they belong more to the dress code “Black Tie”
• Sneakers, a classic white sneaker can look nice with a summer dress, but in this case it’s a bit too casual.
• Flip flops or casual sandals like Birkenstocks
• Don’t be afraid to show some leg, but avoid wearing mini-mini dresses.

For men, the cocktail attire should be a bit more dressed up than a day at the office but not as formal as a three-piece suit. It shouldn’t be too casual, but don’t be afraid to have fun and show your personality with some cool pieces. Here are some outfit ideas for men that fit the cocktail theme.

A button down shirt with either short or long sleeves is always a great choice and a good go-to for a cocktail dress code.  A white T-shirt and a cool blazer can go a long way, but keep in mind a T-shirt by itself might be a bit too casual.

Here’s our list of no-go’s when it comes to cocktail attire for men:

• No performance sneakers. All-white sneakers are ok, but try to avoid wearing sneakers with mesh or neon colors.
• Shorts. A nice pair of shorts are acceptable for a work BBQ or a garden party, but are still too casual for cocktailwear.
• Jeans/denim
• Hoodies
• Baseball caps
• Flip flops and slides. Unless you’re going to a beach wedding, stick to close-toed shoes.
• Plaid or flannel shirts. While we all love a lumberjack look, it’s not the best choice for a cocktail party.
• T-shirts with slogans
• Pants that are too skinny – these can look to casual.
