How to pull off the Canadian Tuxedo, 2023’s chicest co-ord trend

Why does the Canadian Tuxedo get such a bad rap? Double denim has been low-key trendy for decades, and it is coming back in full force for 2023: Canada’s most polarising creation is the co-ord trend of the year.

And more than obvious costume party attire, double denim can be surprisingly chic. Maya Hawke, Cate Blanchett, Kai-Isaiah Jamal, and most recently Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have all sported the Canadian Tuxedo. And not only that: respected labels like JW Anderson, Givenchy, and Dion Lee have sent more than one model down the runway in head-to-toe denim.

Contrary to popular belief, the Canadian Tuxedo can be more than denim button-downs and matching jeans: corset tops, maxi skirts, knee-high boots, shorts, and even three-piece suits are part of the ever-so-chic double-denim universe. I’ll let you in on another secret: the two denim pieces don’t even have to match.

A full dark-wash denim ensemble can feel super dressy and refined, while a light-wash gives a more casual vibe. Other colours of denim, like black and even lilac, make for a show-stopping outfit.
