Grunge style inspired by Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain
As the frontman of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain is an emblem of grunge, the fashion and musical movement that defined the other half of the Spice Girls-soaked ’90s.
An antithesis to the decadence of the decade prior, the grunge movement singles out androgynous and rough-around-the-edges styles. Worn-in t-shirts and oversized flannels, goth-like dresses and leather jackets were uniform to the MTV generation.

Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged"
Worn during the taping of Nirvana’s 1993 performance on “MTV Unplugged”, Kurt Cobain’s cardigan was sold this week for $334,000, making it the most expensive sweater ever sold at auction.
Considered one of Nirvana’s best performances, the cardigan has never been washed and includes all the stains from its original wear.
Like Cobain’s tattered cardigan, the grunge aesthetic is unkempt. It’s gritty and lived-in, symbolic of the rock bands that made the decade famous.
Rock your own grunge look with oversized fits, clashes of flannel and fishnet, chunky boots, and goth-inspired pieces.
