In Susan Sontag’s famed essay, and the inspiration behind the 2019 Met Gala, “Notes on ‘Camp” (1964), she emphasizes the elements of camp as those of shocking excess and theatricality.
Camp is an overkill. It’s overindulgence and exorbitance; it’s also fabulously fun to take part in. Ideal for a board meeting or job interview? Maybe not; but if you’re keen for a bit of excess, why not dip your toes in a bit camp?
