The innovative structure and fabric composition of Thomas’s product helped Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton to complete his trip to and from Antarctica, and pioneering female pilot Betty Kirby-Green to fly from Croydon, London, to Cape Town in record-breaking time. Today, Burberry’s innovative and sophisticated products are still inspiring a new generation of creatives—the Burberry Generation—to venture into unexplored depths and discover new realities on a literal, emotional, and metaphorical level.

Indeed, adventure is the theme of A Burberry Summer, the British maison’s latest swimwear collection. Through a multimedia campaign, A Burberry Summer unites the Burberry Generation community by capturing the free spirit and optimism of the season. For these warm months, Burberry is taking their fresh swimwear collection out into hazy summer days as tribute in a fantasy outdoor escape.

A Burberry Summer is a tribute that draws on the brand’s bold heritage. It gives the centre stage to one of the maison’s design pillars: the Burberry check motif. One of the most iconic patterns in the world, the check is constantly evolving along with the brand, and its creative potential is continuously refreshed and explored in playful and innovative ways. The campaign adopts the check as its main character, reinventing its appeal across a curation of swimwear, apparel, robes, towels, and bags.

A Burberry Summer transposes the check motif as an embossed texture detail for the cotton jacquard hooded robes, hoodies, and towels; blows it up in size on silk shirts and shorts; and even presents it in a pale azure, bold cobalt, and white summery colourway. The Thomas Burberry monogram and the Knight emblem—two other fundamental house codes—are featured in the collection on straw hats and bags, as well as shirts, athleisure, and swimwear, as a reminder of what it feels like to be free.

Burberry has a long history of patronage and support of artists, including musicians, actors, and filmmakers. The video campaign for A Burberry Summer is shot by London-based photographer and filmmaker Tyrone Lebone, who has built himself a reputation within the fashion industry for his candid, “imperfect”, bright images. Burberry has a powerful and authentic connection with the short film medium, and Daniel Lee’s vision is brought to life by Lebone’s imagery. The short film features an original score by DJ and producer Vegyn, who has famously worked with singer and songwriter Frank Ocean on his 2017 projects Blonde and Endless, as well as JPEGMAFIA. Lastly, London-based artist Covco contributes to the short film with a voiceover reading of her poem/diary entry STRANGER TO LOVE. The works of these bold creatives merge together to create the atmosphere of a hazy, warm day of summer adventure.
