How to style the “Soft Crop”, this season’s hottest cut
Vogue declared it: the “soft crop” is the coolest short haircut of Fall/Winter 2023. Inspired by Linda Evangelista’s signature hairdo, the soft crop is a “gentle, almost grown-out interpretation of a timeless, classic crop,” London-based hairstylist Francesca Inverarity explained to Vogue editor Hannah Coates.
The cut’s soft edges mean that it can be adapted to fit any face shape and texture, as well as allowing for a myriad of styling options: according to Inverarity, “leaving the hair longer at the edges means it can be tucked behind the ear, which softens the style around the eye line,” while, “keeping the hair slightly longer with a grown-out feel at the back creates a more gentle effect on the neckline.”
If you’re looking to take the plunge and get the coolest “big chop” of the season, here’s everything you need to know about styling your new soft crop.
The soft crop is surprisingly versatile, thanks to its grown-out ease. Wear it parted to the side (à la Iris Law), slicked back for an edgy look, or combed to the front to create the illusion of a “faux” fringe. Two products are a must for all these looks: texturising spray and hair gel. When it comes to maintaining your cut, it literally couldn’t be easier: lean into the “natural and undone” appeal of the soft crop and simply let it air-dry (after applying your texturising spray!).
Another fun way of styling your soft crop is with hair accessories: clips, bows, barrettes, headbands, and scarves all have the power to change the vibe of your look for ultimate versatility and ease. Hair accessories like bows have reached viral status this year thanks to trending aesthetics like Balletcore, Blokette, and the Y2K revival, and the soft crop is the perfect canvas to rock them all.

It isn’t by chance that short ‘dos always become more popular when the cold starts to creep in: Fall/Winter fashion seems to be made for short hair! Your soft crop will beautifully complement high-neck jumpers and oversized coats, and won’t feel fussy when wearing hats and scarves.
