Lacoste Polo Shirts
Lacoste is the quintessential brand for polo shirts as founder, Rene Lacoste, is credited as designing the garment back in the 1920s. 1. The Crocodile Logo
It’s the symbol of the Lacoste brand that is recognised worldwide and adorns the breast of every Lacoste polo shirt: the crocodile! But where does it come from? The former tennis player René Lacoste made a bet that he’d win an important tennis match. The prize? A crocodile-skin bag. He lost the match – but a journalist reported that he’d fought like a crocodile. Lacoste earned the nickname, and soon after, a friend of his stitched the animal onto his blazer – since then the crocodile has adorned T-shirts, polo shirts and even caps.
2. The Invention of the Polo Shirts
The Lacoste label was founded in the 1930s, when tennis players still played in long-sleeved shirts. In order to make tennis outerwear more comfortable but at the same time more chic, the label created short-sleeved polo shirts made from Pique cotton. The flipped collar allowed the shirt to appear elegant and also made it popular among sportsmen. Lacoste polo shirts have been worn by famous personalities such as Winston Churchill, John F Kennedy and Bing Crosby.
3. One shirt – 3 cuts
The classic casual shirts come in different styles.
- The Original: Cut in a wide and slightly longer style, with a wider collar. This Lacoste polo shirt looks best with regular fit jeans and trainers.
- Regular Fit: Both the shirt and the sleeves have a narrower cut, and have more details as well as a longer strip of buttons – suitable for thinner males. For the best look, wear tucked into belted chinos.
- Slim Fit: A narrow cut which also has tight-fitting sleeves This style accentuates the masculine figure of young, fashion-conscious men – combine it with high quality trousers or skinny jeans.
Lacoste polos shirts were originally white, but since 1955 they’ve been produced in a variety of colours. The original, pioneering design was given the name L1212 – L for Lacoste, 1 for the unusual Pique material, 2 for the short sleeves that were until then unthinkable and 12 for the number of the model which René Lacoste eventually chose.
