Wool sweaters belong to the most essential winter basics. But choosing the right one isn’t always easy: Office looks call for more sophisticated designs than casual looks, while not every type of wool feels good on your skin – a scratchy sweater can feel like torture. Consider this when it comes to thick fabric: Which shape is best for your body type? Stylight’s got your back!
Which material?
Virgin wool keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The only downside: The material can be itchy on sensitive skin. Wool sweaters made of cashmere, mohair, or merino wool are softer and feel better on sensitive skin. More affordable options have cotton in their fabric blend. Pure cotton sweaters are best for the warmer seasons and convenient, because they are machine washable. Nowadays, most fabrics contain synthetic material, which makes them more durable and affordable.
Perfect for the occasion
The color and shape of a wool sweater determine if it is appropriate for business or casual attire. For work, cashmere sweaters look especially nice when worn with a blazer and suit or skirt; fine-knit cotton and subtle colors, or shades of nude are appropriate. Crew-neck sweaters are as great for the office as V-neck sweaters, whose neckline should not plunge too deeply. Dare to wear coarse-knit sweaters in bright colors when you’re off the clock, for example Norwegian sweaters, or off-the shoulder sweaters for a night out on the town.
For all shapes and sizes
Women with pear-shaped bodies look best in long wool sweaters with boat neck or cowl necklines. These sweaters accentuate your shoulders and magically make your hips appear narrower. Appliqués on the neckline and chest are also flattering. Women with hourglass figures can highlight their curves with knitted wrap-sweaters, or a beltto complete the look. Slim, androgynous types look great in oversized sweaters and wide shawl collars, as well as batwing sleeves.
Quality makes a difference when it comes to wool sweaters: Cheaper materials can become worn or stretched out, and get fuzzy more quickly.
