Meet The Man Behind J.W. Anderson
Since launching his eponymous label in 2008, this young London-based designer has given us a unique design approach and refreshing interpretation of masculinity and femininity through his collections. Anderson’s thought-provoking silhouettes and gender-bending elements have earned his label a cult following, not to mention countless awards.
So who is the man behind this widely successful label?
His Origins:
Jonathan Anderson is from a small village called The Loup in Ireland’s County Derry. Originally destined for the stage, Anderson at one point had moved to the U.S. to become an actor but later swapped drama for design and turned his creative hand to menswear.
His Designer Beginnings:
After making his menswear debut in 2008, fashion It girls started clamoring over his androgynous collections, making it easy for him to transition into womenswear in 2010.
His Cult Following:
Loved by the style set, celebs like Rita Ora, Alexa Chung and Solange Knowles are all fans of the designer’s off-beat aesthetic.
His Many Hats:
Having completed two successful collaborations with fast fashion retailer, Topshop, Anderson was later tapped by Donatella Versace to design a collection for Versace’s diffusion label Versus in 2013, which the fashion world also fawned over. Later that year, he was named the new creative director of Spanish luxury brand Loewe with the aim of adding a sense of modernity. The deal, struck with fashion conglomerate LVMH, also secured him financial backing for his own label.
J.W. Anderson has evolved into an internationally renowned and award-winning brand, having won the fashion world over with its modern take on menswear and womenswear— none of which would have been possible without this man behind the brand.
