Guess was one of the first brands to propel jeans to designer status. Although it offers a more extensive range of clothing than just this one garment, the company’s denim products capture its essence. By the ‘70s, denim had become overused and mainstream. Origins
In 1981, South of France natives Maurice and Paul Marciano, hopped across the pond from Europe to build their fashion brand in California. They begged Bloomingdale’s to stock their three-zip Marilyn jeans. The department store reluctantly agreed to sell a mere two dozen—but were soon glad they did. Guess’ tight-cut jeans sold out within just a few hours.
Hollywood Fame
Guess soon became one of the most popular jeans brands in the world. The first designs were for women, but in 1983 they debuted a men’s line. With the help of 1985 movie “Back to the Future”, whose main character Marty McFly wore distinctive Guess denim clothing designed specifically for the film, Guess began to garner equal appeal from both sexes.
Ad Campaigns
Guess’ ad campaigns were what really cemented its celebrity-level fame. Featuring sultry supermodels such as Claudia Schiffer, Carla Bruni, and Naomi Campbell, who all launched their careers in the original Guess campaigns, the sexy, All-American, vintage-style shoots made women around the world want to be a Guess girl.
