Double beds for minimalists, romantics and those who love luxury

Purchasing a double bed is mostly a long-term investment and should be thought about carefully. The decision not only depends on the availability of space but also on which quality standard your bed has to fulfill.

Classic double beds

  • Set up: Solid wood frame or upholstered bed, slatted frame, separated mattresses, high headboard and foot-board
  • Style: Upholstered beds whose headboards and frames are covered with leather or fabric seem modern; in classic, angular or curved shape
  • Required space: for small rooms, choose a flat headboard which does not overwhelm the room optically. For big rooms, upholstered beds with elaborately designed headboards are suitable.
  • Width: 140 to 180 cm
  • These go with it: small, square nightstand and small lamps mounted on the wall

Luxurious box spring beds

  • Set up: Following American king-size beds, they have a box-shaped, sprung base, a thick mattress as an overlay and mostly a high headboard. They are higher than classic double beds, without frames.
  • Style: Mostly leather or textile cover, often quilted headboard, box-shaped
  • Required space: These double beds are suitable only for big bedrooms.
  • Width: 160 to 240 cm
  • These go with it: Permanently mounted nightstands, reading lamps attached to the headboard

Romantic canopy beds

  • Set up: Double beds with steel or wooden frames, slatted frame and mattress, posts covered with fabric, flat headboard
  • Style: Sophisticated, curved iron bars or wooden frame in colonial style
  • Required space: for bigger rooms with a high ceiling where the bed has to be the absolute focal point
  • Width: 140 to 240 cm
  • These go with it: Chain of lights (wrapped around the bars), white bedding, semi-transparent textile canopy

Futon and multi-functional beds

  • Set up: without feet, supporting surface made of wood, no slatted frame or as multi-functional bed with drawers beneath the lying surface. They can be converted into a couch.
  • Style: Asian flair, minimalist design and clear shapes
  • Required space: small bedrooms and students’ rooms, loft apartments or as a spare bed
  • Width: 140 cm to 160 cm
  • These go with it: small, low side tables or small tables that can be folded out

The choice of the double bed mainly depends on the size of the room. However, it should also match the style of the rest of the furnishings. Box spring beds are modern and make for American flair. Beds with frames, slatted frames and mattresses are classic. Romantics love canopy beds, minimalists and space savers choose futons or multi-functional beds.
