4 reasons why your home should have curtains
You won’t find any home accessory that’s more useful than curtains. Whether you decide to go for a classic café curtain, elegant sliding panel curtains or stylish eyelet curtains, you may like to take a look at the following advice from Stylight on the various purposes they serve:
1. Privacy
Many homes have external window shutters or internal roller blinds, in which case curtains offer added privacy. In order to avoid sitting in the dark in the daytime with your Venetian blinds rolled down, drawn curtains or mid-height café curtains (e.g. from Loberon) are ideal. They’re sure to protect you from prying eyes. In ground-floor apartments and rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, in particular, curtains are an absolute must. Tip: In the case of mid-height café curtains that are permanently drawn, make sure the fabric lets in sufficient light.
2. Sun protection
Semi-transparent curtains and sliding curtain panels made from thin, light fabrics (such as those offered by Home Wohnideen) are not only permeable to light and air, but also provide protection from excessive sunlight. This guarantees a pleasant room climate even on very hot days. Tip: If the main purpose of your curtains is to offer protection from the sun, bold, dark colors aren’t the ideal choice as they fade quite quickly.
3. Decorative accessory
Curtains are an ideal, cost-effective way of creating a homely atmosphere – whether it be in the living room, the kitchen or the bedroom. Available in a vast array of fabrics, in both bold and elegantly subdued colors and featuring patterns or motifs, curtains can transform the look of a room in an instant; what’s more, they can be replaced whenever you feel like a change of decor. Tip: For decorative purposes, thin, semi-transparent drapes made from narrow lengths of fabric (e.g. from Esprit Home) which merely frame the window are the ideal choice.
4. Sound insulation
We all like some peace and quiet, especially in the bedroom. Floor-length curtains made from heavy fabrics (e.g. from Dekoria) help to ensure a good night’s sleep. Thick fabrics, such as cotton, linen or strong polyester, are ideal for absorbing traffic noise and echoing. Tip: When buying heavy fabrics, it’s best to avoid very dark colors. Otherwise, the curtains can make the room look oppressive.
Depending on the purpose of your curtains, there are various options available. Semi-transparent café curtains provide added privacy, floor-length curtains made from thick material absorb outside noise, sliding panel curtains offer protection from the sun, and drapes create a warm, homely atmosphere.
