A Brief History Of Lingerie
French lingerie brand Chantelle has been in the business of making bold, sexy and oh-so-chic underlings since 1876. That’s over ten decades of witnessing the evolution of our undergarments, or as the French like to call it lingerie, into what it is today.

The Perfect Curve
In the mid 1800s, around the time the word lingerie was coming to be, women of the Western world wore organ-crushing, whalebone corsets and bustles (undergarments worn around the waist that made skirts appear fuller in the back) underneath their gowns. The goal was to create a swan-like, “S” silhouette that was considered the pinnacle of feminine beauty at the time.
Taste Of Freedom
By the time corsets were phased out in the early 1920s, women turned a sartorial eye towards less fabric and less support. They were free and needed undergarments to match said freeness, so women were stepping into something a little more comfortable: the slip. It helped achieve the desired boyish shape of flappers at the time. This is also around the same time many companies provided the newly liberated woman with the brasserie, including Chantelle.
