Storage with Style: Baskets for Every Purpose

Baskets are useful not only in wardrobes and on shelves for making things tidy, they are also ideal for small storage in the kitchen, the office and bathroom. Which basket is suited to which purpose? Stylight presents practical home accessories with maintenance tips.

Shelf baskets: putting order in open or closed closets

Whether you want to stow office materials in a workroom, toilet items in the bathroom, clothing in the bedroom or toys in the children’s room – there are different rules to follow for open and closed closets.

  • Closed closets: Reasonably priced baskets made from raffia, felt, or plastic are usually sufficient to keep things tidy. There are small versions for under a dollar and larger storage baskets for less than ten dollars.
  • Open closets: For these you should pay attention to designs and materials. Felt and plastic are recommended for a children’s room, while tougher materials like rattan and metal are good for the kitchen and office. Color and design should fit the general tone of the room.

Baskets for specific purposes

Baskets are ideal for safekeeping valued possessions, for example, a dinner service in the kitchen. They can also be used for jewelry storage. In addition, there are baskets which have been created with certain qualities and designs for specific purposes. These include bread and fruit baskets, laundry baskets, baskets for picnics, shopping, plants, pets, bottles, and also sturdier baskets to hold wood by the stove.

3. Materials and maintenance

Baskets need not always be made from rattan, raffia or wicker. The choice ranges from felt and synthetics (for example nylon or faux leather PVC in lookalike rattan) to cardboard, wool and metal.

The braided varieties require special attention:

  • Maintenance: To prolong its lifespan, the braiding should be dampened occasionally.
  • Cleaning: Just use a brush and warm water. If quite dirty, use soap. To avoid damage, don’t use harsh cleansing agents.
  • Coating and re-coating: Most baskets can be coated with wood protecting colors to create a new look. Exceptions: Unpeeled rattan and wicker are practically unpaintable.

Baskets are without a doubt a great help in stowing away large and small items. The range of different designs and materials make them suitable for all types of rooms, and they ensure a clear view and arrangement of your possessions.
