The Holiday Beauty Survival Starter Pack
December through to January is the worst possible time to expect great skin. Naturally this is when we need to be looking our best. The great Holiday Skin Paradox strikes about this time every year: You know; when we’re really starting to get into the thick of the Christmas parties, meanwhile subconsciously winding down and starting to acknowledge our exhaustion from the year that was.
All of the above wreaks havoc on our skin. Stress hormones are flying all over the place, mid-week hangovers are standard December procedure, and operating on minimal sleep is expected. So, splotchy, puffy skin, dark under-eye circles, and bloated stomachs, come on down! Oh, and because it’s winter, we’re also fortunate enough to look forward to a dull pallor. It’s a sexy combination. How to evade the holidays’ apocalyptic effect on our bodies?
Sadly, it’s unavoidable if you’re intent on drinking like a fish and saying ‘Oh, go on’ to every hors d’oeuvre that passes your nose. But for those who swear they’ll be good this holiday season, here’s a few beauty survival tips to incorporate between celebrations.
1. Drink a ridiculous amount of water.
Water, water, water, water, water. Drink it, shoot it, do whatever you can to ingest as much water as possible. It’s winter, so you’re already dehydrated whether or not you realise it. Plus it’s a natural detoxifier so will help to reduce the bloating.
2. Always take off your makeup with a muslin cloth after a night out.
No, we don’t care how ridiculously merry you are, that’s no excuse. As soon as you get home and you’ve dunked your head under the tap to follow Tip #1, reach for your favourite cleanser and get the muck off your face so it doesn’t encourage further spots to appear. The muslin cloth will gently make quick work of this.
3. Get as much quality sleep as possible.
Emphasis on ‘quality.’ Sometimes fours hours is better than eight, if it’s better quality. To ensure this, leave your phone on the other side of your bedroom (a great way for forcing yourself out of bed to turn off your six morning alarms) to physically and mentally separate yourself from the outside world and naturally rest. Also earplugs help. Yes you will still hear your alarm in the morning, promise, but they will drown out the white noise.
4. Stick to a ‘Four No More’ drinking rule.
If you’re known to get “carried away” at seasonal functions, keep control of your impish ways by mandating a strict ‘four no more’ policy. Trouble only happens after four drinks. So have a fabulous time imbibing whatever you wish, just don’t have five of them.
5. Exfoliate once a week.
The build-up of excessive dirt from holiday makeup and dry, wintery skin only adds to this time of year’s beauty woes, so be vigilant and give your face and whole body a good weekly scrub.
6. Do a quick DIY facial.
This doesn’t have to be an expensive exercise; you can recreate a spa facial at home by making these all-natural face masks.
7. Keep your nail polish looking polished.
No chipped nails allowed. They are banned from the group. No. Always have your nail polish to hand (ba-dum-dum-tss) so you can quickly go over it if you’ve got to race off to an event after work.
